Theme

The whole theme behind my game is that this intergalactic, hyper intelligent race called the "Hoov-Ari" took the greatest warriors from different dimensions, time, and worlds to fight for the title "Pantheon" which means you are the best warrior throughout the multiverse. The Hoov-Ari takes a warrior leader and 4 of their best fighters to form a squad to duke it out with other five man teams. The whole battle takes place on an intergalactic space station and each warrior's starting area is outfitted with an environment that is best suited for each warrior. To implement this idea I was thinking of using Masonite for a multiple piece board. The board won't be totally connected, but it'll still hopefully look cool. I was also messing with some box art ideas and what should be on there. I did a quick sketch on what a Hoove-Ari should look like. I was kind of inspired by Star Wars. I was also playing with the idea of etching the characters on a small flat pieces of wood instead of sculpting out the pieces out of clay which would take a whole lot of time.

Play test, Play test, Play test

I've play tested my game Galactic Arena several times and the feed back from my game was very helpful. I can now make necessary revisions to make my game more fun and entertaining. Here is some of the feed back from the students who played my game.

Game Ideas

Game Ideas List
  • The first idea I came up with was out on the deck in front of the Ulla Searing Center. I was sitting at one of the metal tables and I noticed that there were some ants scurrying for some food. They were all over the place and that is when it hit me "this would be a great board game". I even got a name for it on the spot "Red Ants Gants". A game where the player is one of the red ants going through out the board trying to find food bits to bring back to the colony and the one who brings back the most wins.
  • The next game idea is called "Circuit Breaker". A two player game where a player has to complete a circuit by placing 5 tiles on points that are on a grid. the Grid will have paths with points along it to complete a circuit. While trying to complete a circuit your opponent is also doing the same, but the opponent can break the circuit by crossing your path. It a back and forth battle of the wits.
  • "Flap Jacked" is the name of my third one and its a search/stealth game. 5 people can play the game and they have to rob a museum to find the "Eye of Hookoolookoo" a ruby red diamond which is is the size of a child's hand. The players have to compete to steal this item while trying to avoid cameras, guards, and pressure alarms

  • My main idea for a board game is a king of the hill/strategy game. I'm at an in pass with the name of the game. It is either "The Galactic Arena" or "Octagon". The whole lore behind this idea is that this intergalactic, hyper intelligent race called the "Hoov-Ari" took the greatest warriors from different dimensions, time, and worlds to fight for the title "Pantheon" which means you are the best warrior through out the multiverse. The Hoov-Ari takes a warrior leader and 4 of their best fighters to form a squad to duke it out with other five man teams. The board is set up as a variant of the octagon shape. Each player starts at a side and works their way to the center where the flag is. Then the player has to stay there and hold there position to defend that main point. Other players will be trying to take that point as well. If the player can hold the point for 8 turns then they win the game. Another way to win the game is to destroy the opposing player's leader. There can be up to eight players, so it can be quite a daunting task to pull off. Each race has their own unique set of skills. Movement of the pieces is squad based except for the leader of the team. The four fighters that accompany the leader can move 2 spaces as a group. The leader can move a total of four spaces. The fighters have two skills that they can use and they are all the same for each fighter from that race. The leader has a four unique skills that they can use to wreck people strategy with.
  • Navel Warfare: A variant of the card game war.  2 players are playing as lint trying to escape the black hole that is the belly button.
  • Lice: A four player game on a square 15x15 grid and the point is to fill your blood level to the cap.
  • Grave robber: players have to revive dead cadavers to destroy each other and steal loot. 6 players start with a base amount of loot. Some graves might have loot in them which will augment your wealth. The point is to fight your opponent and steal their loot.
  • Guardian: A 3 person game and you're gargoyles that are in a cathedral and you have to defend it for 5 days ( days are events in which demons attack in different ways.
  • Manifesto: A ww2 naval battleship game on a 10x10 grid and the objective is to find their opposite players u-boat. Along with that task you are also fighting a battle atop the water.
  • Toe Jam: 5 players are fungi on a race to reach the back of the foot. They have to handle situations like that prevent their progression.
  • Crabs: 2 player game on a 10 by 10 grid. The objective is to lay your eggs before the incoming tides.
  • Wells: 3 players start out as robot cores that are trying to form a metallic body. 3 points are on a 5x5 grid and these points are wells that give you robot parts. Players can use these parts to hinder players progression.
  • Cob Web: 2 players have to form cobwebs on a 5x5 grid. Players have to connect a string along these points on to complete a shape thats on an info sheet. Thing is you can get points off of the opponent's midway creations.
  • Bridge: 2 players have to build a bridge across an 8x8 bridge. Its similar to the light cycle race in tron, but you have limited amount of pieces to get across.
  • lights: 5x5 grid with 2 players duking it out to light solar systems with suns.

Zombie Plague

I was trying to find a good zombie game to play that didn't take much time to play and was still entertaining. After shuffling through zombie game after zombie game i found one that was free and easy to set up. One wouldn't believe what kind of prices some of these makers are trying to get us to pay. It is ridiculous! It is an extremely easy game to play and if you have luck it can be very exciting and fun. The version of zombie plague I played is slightly different, but still covers the main goal of the original game. Its called Kwanchai's Zombie Plague Redesign
  •        Core Mechanic & Goal: I wanted to hit the core mechanic of the game first because it is the most interesting aspect of this game. Players have four action points to use per turn to move and deal with their surroundings. Each player has to go through out the board searching the area for supplies and to encounter events. This adds a bit of mystery and desperation to the game. The goal of the game is to find the cellar door to hide in or find car keys, so the group can drive away. An additional mechanic is teamwork. Without working with each other the game gets very difficult to play. Another mechanic is in the rules. The rules say that when a player is at a search square the player can't stay at that square after they have pick up an item. The rule also states that the player in order to return back to that same search square has to seek out all other search squares in the game. This forces the player to explore the whole board.
  •        The Layout: The board has six pieces with each piece being an 8X10 grid resembling an estate. There are six search squares as well. There are also 11doors & windows as a collective that can be barricaded.

  • Player's and what they do: There can essentially be five players though the game is only meant for four. You can have four players playing as humans and one controlling the zombies. There four human players and they come with 4 action points. These action points can be spent moving, setting up barricades, and attacking. The movement is quite simple. A player can spend all their ap(action points) to move four squares forward in the direction they are facing in. To turn the player's direction the player has to rotate their character in a single square each 90 degree rotation cost one ap. The player also can move backwards only one square without having to rotate the character all the way around. A player can choose to attack a zombie, but has to be in one square distance from the zombie and facing it to attack. There are weapons in the game that can give you distance privileges, so the player wouldn't have to be so close to the zombie to attack. The player then rolls a 6 sided die to determine if a zombie is killed or blown back. 1-4 are misses, 5 makes the zombie move back a space, and 6 is a kill shot. The zombie player starts at the opposite end of the board where the players start. The same attribute still apply to zombies as they were mimicking the humans except that they have a set of roll skills. One set spawns zombies, One give the humans a chance to survive a bite, and one set allows them to attack.
  • What players learn: Playing this game requires teamwork, strategy, and a taste for adventure. When playing this game you learn to work together to overcome hoards of zombies and set up defenses quickly and efficiently.
  • Personal Experience: Overall the game was very fun and interesting to play even though I had my head handed to me on a silver plater. The game in my own opinion requires a massive amount of luck and strategy which I personally think makes the game more exciting, even though my luck ran out quickly I wasn't the first to die.
